My dearest Ava Marie,
It is now 1 week since my water first broke. I am laying here staring at you in your bassinet looking like the most beautiful angel ever. I can't imagine my life without you in it. I am so blessed to be your mother and I cannot wait to spend my life with you.
My water broke 1 week ago. Your Daddy was on the San Mateo bridge on his way home. When he finally got to me his gas light was on and we had to stop for gas on our way to the hospital. When we arrived, the hospital could not confirm that my water had really broken. They sent us to go walk for two hours. During that time, your Grandma and Grandpa and Uncle Dave, Auntie Veronica and Auntie Colleen met us at the hospital. When we returned after 2 hours, they were able to confirm my water had broken and you were well on your way. They found I was leaking merconium, but told me it was not enough to endanger you. Because my contractions were still about 10 minutes apart, they gave me the option of inducing then or waiting 6 hours or so. I opted for the 6 hour option, I didn't want to put more medicine in you and I than I absolutely had to. We checked in, got a little sleep and at about 2:30am, your daddy and I started walking the halls of the hospital trying to make you come naturally. When that didn't work, we decided to get some help from Petocin at about 5am. My contractions started picking up and by about 10am I was screaming for an epidural. It took almost an hour to get one - when I finally did I felt great. I slept through most of my labor, waking up to get more pain meds. every so ofter because the regular strength epidural was not doing the trick. By 5:45, I was 10cm dilated and ready to push. I pushed for an hour and a half and finally with one big push you were out. I had a large mirror in the room so I could watch everything. You were perfect when you arrived, you were clean and beautiful - not one drop of blood on you. They gave you to me to hold and you didn't cry - you were wide awake - just perfect. When they took you from me to check you out etc., they noticed you were having trouble breathing. The pediatrician came in and determined you had inhaled Merconium and needed to be taken to the NICU. My heart was broken but I knew you would be fine. Daddy went with you to the NICU - the first time I got to see you was later that night. Attached to Oxygen, IV's etc. You were so beautiful and small and pricked everywhere - it broke my heart. That night the nurse delivered a pump to my room so I could pump since I wasn't able to nurse you. Over the next two days, I spent as much time as possible in the NICU. I was able to start breast feeding you but it was very complicated - you were attached to so many tubes. I have to say though you have been the most amazing breast feeder since the moment we started. You have latched right on and never looked back. Before my milk fully came in, you weren't getting enough and were still hungry. The nurses convinced me to give you a little bit of formula from a bottle - I really didn't want to do this. Luckily you have taken only a little bit of formula. We were finally able to bring you to our room on Monday evening, 48 hours after your birth. It was the most amazing night just watching you sleep. On Tuesday we brought you home!
Since we got you home, you have been them most amazing baby - you are perfect! You eat sleep and poop! You are a gassy little girl and let out the cutest farts only a Mommy and Daddy could love. You open your eyes more and more every day. Today Daddy and I got probably almost an hour of open eye time - you have beautiful eyes. We aren't sure what color they are going to be yet. When you were released from the hospital, they determined you had a slight case of jaundice and you have been back to the doctors twice this week. All of your tests have come back great though and you have gained 4 oz. in the past two days.
I cannot tell you how in love with you I am. How I would walk the ends of the earth for you. It is a love that I have never in my life felt and keeps me going. You are amazing and beautiful and already brilliant - you scored a 9 on both APGAR tests. I tell everyone I can about this. You snore these cute little snores sometimes and have what I can tell are dreams. You wake up whimpering a couple times a day. You poop every time I give you a sponge bath and pee just about every time Daddy or I change your diaper. Right now you and Daddy are laying on the bed taking a nap - you both look so beautiful. You and I took a nap together earlier today. I have been trying to keep you in your bassinet to sleep but once or twice a day I splurge with you in our bed.
I love you SO much my angel, my princess. I promise to try and keep this updated as much as possible!
